6 Best Freediving Sites Around Koh Tao

Looking for the best freediving sites in Koh Tao? Explore six incredible locations featuring coral reefs, turtles, reef sharks, barracuda schools, whale sharks, and unforgettable underwater adventures.

Koh Tao is known as one of the world’s premier destinations for freediving. Warm tropical waters, great visibility, vibrant marine life, and dive sites suitable for every level make it the perfect place to explore the underwater world on a single breath.

Whether you’re newly certified or an experienced freediver looking for deeper adventures, Koh Tao offers everything from shallow coral gardens and turtles to dramatic pinnacles and the possibility of encountering whale sharks in the blue.

Here are six of Blue Chitta’s favorite freediving sites around Koh Tao.

1. Aow Leuk – Koh Tao’s Underwater Playground

Aow Leuk is one of the most popular shore diving locations on the island, and for good reason. With easy access directly from the beach and depths ranging from 3 to 12 meters, it’s an ideal site for beginners and experienced freedivers alike.

The bay features healthy coral reefs, calm conditions, and an abundance of marine life. Freedivers frequently encounter turtles cruising through the bay, blacktip reef sharks, and colorful reef fish including angelfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, wrasses, and anemonefish.

Its shallow depth makes it perfect for relaxed exploration, underwater photography, and practicing equalization skills in a natural environment.

2. Tanote Bay – Reefs, Turtles & Underwater Structures

Located on Koh Tao’s east coast, Tanote Bay offers some of the most diverse shore diving on the island. Entry is free, and the site ranges from 3 to 18 meters in depth.

One of Tanote’s highlights is the famous underwater playground, a collection of large submerged cube structures resting between approximately 8 and 12 meters. These artificial structures create a fascinating environment for exploration and training.

Large schools of fish frequently gather around the cubes, while turtles and colorful reef species are common visitors throughout the bay.

Above the water, Tanote is also known for its iconic cliff-jumping rock, making it a favorite destination for adventure seekers.

3. Hin Wong Bay – Hidden Beauty on the East Coast

For those seeking a more local and relaxed atmosphere, Hin Wong Bay is a true gem.

Accessible from shore with a small entrance fee, this picturesque bay combines excellent snorkeling and freediving with a laid-back beach atmosphere, local artwork, and occasional live music.

Depths range from 5 to 16 meters, offering plenty of opportunities to explore coral reefs, encounter turtles and juvenile reef sharks, and observe the diverse reef ecosystem.

More adventurous freedivers can explore small caves and swim-throughs located on the right side of the bay.

As with many sites around Koh Tao, it is important to remain aware of boat traffic and always dive responsibly.

4. South West Pinnacle – Deep Blue Freediving Adventure

Located approximately 30 minutes by boat from Koh Tao, South West Pinnacle offers a completely different experience from the island’s shore diving sites.

The pinnacle rises from around 28 meters to a shallow point of approximately 8 meters below the surface, creating a dramatic underwater landscape that attracts large pelagic species.

Massive schools of chevron barracuda circle the pinnacles, often accompanied by trevally, king mackerel, tuna, and other hunting fish moving through the blue water.

The site is also famous for seasonal whale shark encounters, making it one of the most exciting freediving destinations in the Gulf of Thailand.

Along the deeper rocks, giant groupers, rays, moray eels, and countless reef fish make every visit unique.

5. Chumphon Pinnacle – Koh Tao’s Legendary Dive Site

When people talk about world-class diving around Koh Tao, Chumphon Pinnacle is usually part of the conversation.

Located around 30 minutes by boat from the island, this site ranges from 10 to 30 meters in depth and offers spectacular marine life encounters.

Large schools of giant barracuda, yellowstripe trevally, queenfish, and mackerel patrol the area, while giant groupers and moray eels hide among the cracks and rocky formations.

The upper sections of the pinnacle are covered with sea anemones, creating a vibrant habitat for thousands of reef fish.

Like South West Pinnacle, Chumphon Pinnacle is one of Thailand’s best sites for whale shark sightings and remains a bucket-list destination for many freedivers.

6. Sail Rock – The Crown Jewel of the Gulf of Thailand

If there is one dive site every freediver visiting Koh Tao should experience, it is Sail Rock.

Located roughly two hours by boat from Koh Tao, Sail Rock is widely regarded as one of the best dive sites in the entire Gulf of Thailand.

The site ranges from 3 to 28 meters and is famous for its incredible fish density. Huge schools of barracuda, trevally, batfish, tuna, queenfish, and mackerel move around the pinnacle, creating unforgettable underwater scenes.

Colorful reef fish cover the shallower sections, while giant groupers, moray eels, lionfish, and other fascinating marine life can be found throughout the site. One of Sail Rock’s most unique features is the famous Chimney, a natural vertical swim-through hidden within the pinnacle. For freedivers, gliding through this underwater passage is an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of exploring Sail Rock.

Most exciting of all, Sail Rock is one of the most reliable locations in Thailand for whale shark encounters, making every trip an adventure.
